Someone with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder may experience the following signs and symptoms: difficulty concentrating in school, interrupting others, barging in on conversations, or acting inappropriately. In addition to ADHD, you may have another co-occurring mental health disorder that’s complicating your life even further. You may not know what to do or how to recover from this, only that you cannot live like this any longer. You don’t have to.

At Village Behavioral Health, an ADHD treatment center in Knoxville, we’ve helped many adolescents or teens learn to adapt to their conditions, develop necessary coping skills, learn the importance of medication compliance, and develop a lasting plan of care that will allow you to lead a normal, happy, productive life, free from the clutches of ADHD.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for ADHD

You know that your teen isn’t meeting their full potential, but you also understand that they can’t help it. You want so badly for your adolescent or teen to be able to lead the productive, happy teen years they want, but may not know how to broach the subject of treatment. Here are some tips for helping to guide your teen into getting care at a treatment center for ADHD.

Understand the disorder(s): Many times, teens who have ADHD also have other mental health conditions that make the ADHD worse. If your teen has been diagnosed with a co-occurring disorder, understand how complex that makes life for your teen. Research local ADHD treatment centers that focus on treating co-occurring disorders specifically in teens.

The elephant in the room: You know how hard it is to talk to your teen about anything – especially anything personal. But it’s important that you keep trying to talk to your teen about the symptoms and emotions they are experiencing. Assure your adolescent that you love them no matter what and that you’re not going to give up on them – ever.

Tour a treatment center: Many people have unrealistic ideas about what a residential treatment center for ADHD may look like. So making an appointment to tour a residential treatment center that focuses upon treating adolescents or teens struggling with ADHD and co-occurring disorders can be a life-saver. Bring your teen along if you can so they can also get a feel for what treatment may look like.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for ADHD at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

If you’ve had ADHD since you were a child, or if you were recently diagnosed with ADHD and a co-occurring mental health disorder, you’re probably floundering a bit. It’s likely you’re not living up to your scholastic potential. This, in turn, can increase feelings of anxiety and depression – your ADHD is controlling you, not the other way around. You may long for meaningful relationships with other people, but can’t seem to find the right words and the right time to attract other people. You may feel isolated and alone, turning to substance abuse or alcohol to help ease your symptoms and help you forget about your emotional pain. It’s time to get the help you deserve and start taking charge of your life.

A residential treatment center is especially helpful for teens who are struggling with ADHD and co-occurring disorders as it allows an interdisciplinary team of medical and mental health professionals to get to know you and your unique strengths and challenges. Your treatment team will work with you to find a plan of care that works to meet your needs and help you grow, learn, and heal. By leaving the stresses of everyday life behind you, you’ll be able to focus on developing the skills you need to lead the life you want. A residential treatment center is an ideal place for people who have ADHD to learn to heal, and learn to live again.

Types of Treatment

Types of ADHD treatment offered at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

When you come to our ADHD treatment center, located in Knoxville, you’ll first undergo a variety of evaluations designed to help us understand the extent of your challenges. The medical exam will let us know if you’re struggling with any physical challenges or have been using drugs or alcohol to self-medicate the symptoms of ADHD. The psychiatric evaluation will let us understand best the severity of your difficulties and whether or not you are struggling with any co-occurring mental health disorders. We’ll take the results of these evaluations and work with you and your loved ones to create an ADHD treatment plan designed just for you.

Medication such as stimulants like Adderall or Ritalin may be used to help get the symptoms of your ADHD and other co-occurring mental health disorders under control. Medication is a tool for controlling symptoms of your disorders, not a cure, which is why we combine medication with other types of therapies to help you learn to manage your emotional and behavioral challenges.

Individual therapy can be tremendously helpful for teens struggling with ADHD. Through individual therapy you’ll learn behavioral modification, which involves reinforcing the positive behaviors through praise and rewards, while decreasing problem behaviors by setting limits and consequences. You’ll work with your therapist to set specific goals for treatment at our treatment center. You may also use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in your sessions to help understand the ways in which negative patterns of thought can impact your behaviors and work to change your actions for the better.

Group therapy is a highly effective tool we use at our ADHD treatment center in Knoxville. We offer a variety of groups each day that will allow you to work with peers facing similar challenges in order to grow, learn and heal. Group topics may work to teach you more about ADHD, triggers for behaviors, taking responsibility for one’s behavior, problem-solving skills, and social skills.

Family involvement and therapy is very important to help your child during their recovery from ADHD. The Village aims to meet at least once per week with your family – they can call in if they’re unable to be here in person – in order to address issues within the family dynamic that may have led to an increase in symptoms of ADHD. We’ll also provide your loved ones with community referrals to assist them in the healing process.

At our ADHD treatment center, we firmly believe in using experiential methods alongside traditional therapeutic approaches to assist in the healing process. Experiential methods offered at our treatment center may include:

  • Crafts
  • Music therapy
  • Dance therapy
  • Drama
  • Sports and recreational therapy
  • Adventures – such as our ropes course
  • Mindfulness
  • Relaxation and meditation

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for ADHD

At Village Behavioral Health, an ADHD treatment center located in Knoxville, we begin planning for your continued recovery once you leave us the very moment that you walk through our doors. You’ll work with your family, loved ones, and your therapist to identify the best types of step-down options for you. This may include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP); both programs let you focus on your recovery during the day while you slowly reintegrate back into your home life in the evenings.

A couple of weeks before you are discharged, your ADHD treatment team will work with you and your family to make a recommendation for your aftercare. When an appropriate aftercare option has been decided upon, our discharge staff will work with other treatment professions to make certain you have appointments set up for your step-down, which may include an IOP, PHP, or traditional outpatient therapy.

An Ideal Place to Heal
