Benzodiazepines, a class of prescription medication used to manage anxiety disorders, seizures, and insomnia has proved to be invaluable for countless people struggling with these disorders. These medications produce feelings of relaxation and calm for those who need them. Unfortunately, these drugs also carry a potential for abuse. Many teens are turning to benzos, which are often readily available in the medicine cabinet, as a way to reduce stress as well as a means to get high. As benzodiazepines are rarely the first drug of choice among users, they’re often used as a way to augment an existing intoxication. Teens will combine benzos and alcohol to feel more intoxicated, or combine benzos with opiates to increase feelings of euphoria. Combining benzodiazepines, such as Valium, Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin, with other drugs can lead to consequences that last a lifetime. These drugs have a high potential for addiction, meaning that the brain begins to develop a dependence upon them in a short period of time, which can lead to withdrawal symptoms if the drugs are stopped. If you’or someone you love is going through benzo addiction, it’s time to call our benzo addiction rehab center.

At Village Behavioral Health, a benzo addiction treatment center that provides rehab, our campus has been around for 27 years, during which time we’ve helped countless adolescents or teens successfully overcome their addiction and learn to lead a sober life. Our chemical dependency/alcohol and drug treatment program follows the 12-step model for addiction recovery. Adolescents or teens will work in a relapse prevention group and are guided by our staff at the Village in Knoxville, Tennessee to gain control over their addiction to benzodiazepines.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for benzo addiction

If your loved one or child is coping with benzo addiction, you’re probably experiencing a wide range of emotions. A loved one who abuses drugs can stress the family dynamic and you may wonder what to do and how to help your child into the benzo addiction rehab program they need. You may not know how to approach the subject or if your words will have any impact at all. Here are some steps for gently guiding your adolescent or teen into a benzo abuse rehab:

Understand addiction: Addiction is a complex disease, and in order to reach your child on their level, you’re going to have to understand what you’re facing. Consider going to an A.A. or N.A. meeting in order to fully understand the ways in which benzo abuse can impact a person’s life.

Cope with your emotions: It’s entirely understandable that you’re facing a mountain of emotions about your child, and while some of these emotions may make you feel guilty, they’re completely normal. However, you must cope with your feelings before you approach your child about rehab for their benzo addiction. Find a therapist who specializes in treating family members of addicts and seek support in an Al-Anon or Nar-Anon group in your area.

Guide from a place of love: It can be tempting to issue ultimatums, but this will not help convince your child into receiving treatment at a benzo abuse rehab center. Instead, persistently offer treatment options in a gentle manner that will not cause discord in your home. Be gentle, yet persistent.

You may find that you’ve stopped caring about much of anything beyond scoring your next high. When you come to us for help, we’ll work alongside you to create a comprehensive treatment plan for your benzo addiction. You’ll first undergo a series of medical examinations to determine if you’re facing any medical complications as a result of your benzo abuse. Our psychiatric evaluation will let us determine the presence of co-occurring disorders as well as treatment or rehab approaches that may work best for you. We’ll sit down with you and your family to form a plan of benzo abuse rehab for your stay with us.

Medication may be used at the beginning of your rehab as a way to help ease the withdrawal symptoms from benzodiazepines and other drugs. You may need the medication for a few weeks as you learn better ways of coping and then you will be able to slowly taper down the doses until you’re medication-free. Some people may use medication as a part of long-term treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders.

Individual therapy is provided at least once per week – more if needed – and allows you the space at our treatment center to address some of the reasons behind your addiction, begin to deal with past traumas, and learn to cope with some of the challenges in your life. We weave in a variety of therapeutic techniques into your sessions. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can be especially helpful for those on a journey toward sobriety as it allows you to understand how your negative thoughts impacted your actions. CBT will help you learn to rearrange those thoughts and make better choices in the future.

Group therapy is often considered to be the cornerstone for benzo abuse treatment at our rehab center. You’ll attend 12-step meetings and work your steps in other meetings. You’ll have groups that focus on the challenging aspects of sobriety, learn to cope without medications, and focus on learning the adaptive life skills needed to make your life one you’re proud to live.

Family involvement is critical to the recovery of adolescents or teens who are struggling with newfound sobriety. Family sessions will include discussions about the ways in which benzo addiction has impacted each member of your family, coping strategies for your loved ones, and ways that they can support you on your journey. Family sessions are held at least once per week – more if necessary.

As we are focused upon treating the whole teen, we use a number of other treatment approaches alongside traditional therapy at our benzo abuse rehab center in Knoxville. These experiential treatments may include:

  • Recreation therapy
  • Ropes course
  • 12-step meetings
  • Crafts
  • Music
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Sports

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for benzo addiction

During the intake process at The Village, a benzo addiction rehab center in Knoxville, we begin to work out continuing care options to consider after discharge. Your therapist will work with you and your parents to identify possible step-down possibilities to allow for your continuous recovery. Several weeks before discharge, your benzo abuse treatment team will make a recommendation for your aftercare based upon your current and future needs. You may step down from our benzo addiction rehab into an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), both of which will allow you to work on your recovery as you gradually reintegrate back into your life. Some adolescents or teens make enough progress to be ready to return to their community armed with referrals to traditional outpatient therapy and 12-step meetings.
