Disruptive Behavior Disorders Treatment

Learn more about disruptive behavior disorders treatment at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

Disruptive behaviors disorders are characterized by behaviors that consistently break the rules, disrupt the lives of those around them, and consistently defy authority. While it is common for children and teenagers to act out sometimes, when these behaviors become extreme it is time to get professional help. There are two different categories for disruptive behavior disorder; oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder. Children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) throw regular temper tantrums, don’t accept responsibility for their bad behavior, and frequently defy parents and teachers. Conduct disorder (CD) on the other hand, is the more serious of the two disorders as it contains the addition of aggressive behaviors that threaten people, animals, and property. These children regularly bully other children, lie, steal, and skip school. While these disorders can be very problematic, with proper care at a disruptive behavior treatment center, your child can get better.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for disruptive behavior disorders

As a parent of a child who is acting out, you see how the entire family is affected. Dealing with defiant behaviors on a daily basis can leave you feeling frustrated and helpless as to how to get your child’s behavior and emotions under control. Additionally, you may be at a loss for how to restore normalcy and stability to the household. While you know that something must be done about your child’s behavior, you may have many questions. Here are some things you can do to help your child:

Educate yourself: The first thing you can do for your child is to take the time to learn everything you can about disruptive behavior disorders. This way you will have a better understanding about what these disorders are and exactly what your child is experiencing.

Seek help: If you believe that your child is struggling with a disruptive behavior disorder, make an appointment with your child’s primary doctor. Their physician will complete a full evaluation, rule out any acute stressors, and determine any medical causes for the behavior. Once all other possible causes have been ruled out, your doctor can provide you with referrals to a specialist to further assist your family.

Be patient and persistent: Many times parents who have a child with a disruptive behavior disorder will become impatient and lose their temper. It’s important to remember that your child is not intentionally engaging in these behaviors to upset you; they simply don’t know how to properly express their emotions. While helping your child become more aware of their anger, be patient and positively reinforce their good behavior. Additionally, make sure that you stick with the routine provided by your child’s therapist.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for disruptive behavior disorders at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

Children who don’t get treatment for their disruptive behavior disorder will ultimately grow to be dysfunctional adults. The sooner your child is treated at a disruptive behavior treatment center, the better the outcome. Both conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder can cause an adolescent or teen problems at school, issues at home, and cause difficulties in their ability to relate to peers – all of which intensify over time. The disruptive behavior creates conflicts with adults and those whom the child interacts with.

Most adolescents with a disruptive behavior disorder find the treatment offered in a residential disruptive behavior treatment center to be very helpful. Through a residential treatment center, your child will begin a medication regimen and receive all of the necessary therapy. Through a combination of different techniques, your child will learn to control and express their feelings in a more appropriate manner. Individual and group sessions will allow your child the opportunity to explore their emotions and practice newly-learned social skills. Additionally, through parent training and family therapy, parents learn better ways to approach their child and more appropriate disciplines for inappropriate behavior. The goal of a residential program is to get the teen integrated back into the home and family dynamic at his or her highest level of functioning.

Types of Treatment

Types of disruptive behavior disorders treatment offered at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

The residential disruptive behavior treatment offered at Village Behavioral Health provides all patients with 24-hour supervision and an intensive therapeutic experience. Every adolescent or teen in our disruptive behavior treatment engages in individual therapy, group sessions, family therapy, activity therapy, activities of a daily living program, and a full academic program throughout their stay. Each child receives an individualized treatment plan designed around their specific needs. Upon admission at our treatment center, after a thorough assessment used to make a disruptive behavior treatment plan, each child will be assigned to a cabin group. The cabin group will provide teens with positive support from peers during treatment. At The Village, a disruptive behavior treatment center in Knoxville, we use a phase system approach that focuses on treatment instead of behaviors. Each phase focuses on problems, goals, and objectives identified in the master treatment plan.

The treatment for disruptive behavior disorder at The Village is a combination of medication and therapeutic approaches. Some of the methods at our treatment center may include:

Medication: Certain medications may be used to reduce a child’s verbal and physical aggression, negative peer interactions, and other inappropriate behaviors. Stimulants are the most common medication used for these types of disorders, allowing the teen to control symptoms that prevent them from learning proper coping and social skills. After a period of time, medications may be eliminated as the adolescent or teen is better able to control their emotions through healthier coping strategies. We have an in-house psychiatrist and nurse practitioner at our treatment center who oversees medication management.

Individual therapy: Teens with disruptive behavior disorders may use individual sessions to train themselves to become more aware of their anger cues and how to use those cues to initiate newly learned coping strategies. Held at least once a week, individual sessions can also be used to explore the child’s emotions on a more in-depth level.

Group therapy: Groups are held multiple times a day within the cabin group, starting with morning meeting to set goals for the day and evening meeting to discuss the day and what goals were met. Some of our groups focus on distorted thinking and how to change those thoughts, importance of being able to take control of one’s actions, and problem-solving techniques.

Family therapy: Family involvement is very important to creating a change that will last once the teen leaves our program. For adolescents or teens to get the full benefit of our program, their family must be active in the disruptive behavior treatment process. Family therapy is held at least once per week and focuses on issues within the family dynamic. Family visitation is allowed after a child has been in the disruptive behavior treatment center for at least two weeks, starting with on-campus visits and slowly progressing to overnight visits. This time allows the teen to practice their newly-learned skills before they are fully integrated back into the community.

In addition to traditional therapy methods, The Village offers a number of experiential programs for all teens. These include:

  • Music
  • Crafts
  • Sports
  • Recreational therapy
  • Drama
  • Adventures program
  • Mindfulness
  • Relaxation

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for disruptive behavior disorders

At The Village, located in Knoxville, once your teen has completed the residential disruptive behavior treatment, they will meet with a discharge planner to discuss the continuing care plan. Our aftercare planning begins upon admission. Several weeks before discharge, your child’s treatment team will make a recommendation based on the needs of your child, and you will be notified of the treatment recommendation. Before your child is released, their therapist will make contact with the new treatment provider and set up the intake session for the next phase of treatment. Some children will step-down into an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) depending upon how far along in the recovery process they are. Other children may be ready to return home with referrals to traditional outpatient therapy. Whatever your continued needs, Village Behavioral Health will ensure everything is in place before you leave our care.
