How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for ODD

All adolescents or teens become defiant at one point or another, particularly when they are stressed, tired, trying to gain independence, or are upset about a particular situation. They may argue with, talk back to, or directly disobey their parents. Since this type of behavior can be common, especially in the teenage years, it can be difficult to determine if your child has an oppositional defiant disorder or is just being a normal argumentative teen.

Here are some signs to look for in your child to determine if they may have ODD:

  • Frequent temper tantrums
  • Constantly questions the rules
  • Is mean and hateful when upset
  • Excessively argues with adults
  • Deliberately tries to annoy or upset people
  • Has a spiteful or revengeful attitude
  • Active defiance and refusal to comply with rules

If your child has an ongoing pattern of these symptoms, it is time to reach out to their primary care doctor for a comprehensive evaluation. Your child’s physician will look at a detailed history of behaviors in a variety of settings as well as rule out any medical conditions that could be causing their behavior. They can provide you with referrals for mental health professionals that can conduct further assessments and help your child develop an ODD treatment plan that will allow them to be successful in their life. A therapist can teach you more effective parenting skills that will help to get your child’s behavior under better control and bring peace to the household.

In addition to getting your child the help they need, it is also important for you to take the time to learn all you can about this disorder so you have a better understanding of what your child is currently going though. Additionally, make sure that you take some time for yourself – raising an adolescent with ODD can be exhausting.

Here are some additional tips to remember that can help lessen symptoms:

  • Provide positive attention
  • Establish clear rules
  • Create a behavior plan
  • Avoid power struggles
  • Be consistent with consequences

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for ODD at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

If your adolescent or teen has been struggling with oppositional defiant disorder, it is imperative that you seek treatment, as ODD is often accompanied by other serious mental health disorders. If left untreated, ODD can develop into conduct disorder, which is a more serious disruptive behavior disorder. Additionally, if not properly treated, these teens are at increased risked for developing substance abuse and addiction as well as engaging in criminal behavior. With early intervention and care at an ODD treatment center, an adolescent or teen can overcome their ODD and prevent the disorder from developing into a more serious concern.

A residential ODD treatment center specifically designed to treat adolescents or teens with oppositional defiant disorder can help teens overcome their behavioral symptoms and learn techniques to help manage their anger and develop better coping strategies. Through a residential ODD treatment program teens may start a medication regimen and receive the therapy necessary to restore them to their highest level of functioning. Individual and group sessions will allow teens the opportunity to explore their emotions and practice newly-learned social skills. Additionally, through parent training and family therapy, parents can learn better ways to discipline their child and how to reward good behavior. With treatment an adolescent with ODD can learn to live a successful, happy life.

Types of Treatment

Types of ODD treatment offered at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

Our residential ODD treatment center, located in Knoxville, provides teens with 24-hour supervision and intensive therapeutic experience. The staff realizes that there is no generic treatment of adolescents with ODD, which is why each child receives an individualized oppositional defiant disorder treatment plan designed around their specific needs. After a thorough assessment, completed upon admission, each child will be assigned to a cabin group. This group will provide each other with positive support throughout the whole ODD treatment process. At The Village, an ODD treatment center, we use a phase system that focuses upon treatment instead of behaviors. Each phase focuses on problems, goals, and objectives that were previously identified in the master treatment plan.

The ODD treatment center for oppositional defiant disorder at The Village is usually a combination of parent involvement, cognitive problem-solving skills training, building appropriate social skills, medication, and a daily school-based program. Some of the methods offered at our treatment center may include:

Medication: Certain medications may be used alongside our therapies to help control some of the more distressing symptoms of ODD and co-occurring disorders. After a period of time, medications may be eliminated when the adolescent is better able to control his or her emotions and use healthier coping strategies. We have an in-house psychiatrist and nurse practitioner that oversee medication.

Individual therapy: During individual sessions, a therapist may directly teach a teen ways to reduce inappropriate behavior by discussing more positive ways to respond to stressful situations. They may also help teens to see their negative views in a more positive way, letting them respond more appropriately. Individual sessions are held at least once a week, but can be available more on an as-needed basis.

Group therapy: Groups are held multiple times a day within each cabin group starting with meeting every morning to set goals for the day and ending the day with a group to discuss how the day went for each adolescent. Through groups, adolescents can learn to relate more positively to peers. Additionally, some of our groups focus on changing distorted thinking, importance of taking control of one’s own actions, and problem-solving techniques.

Family therapy: Family involvement is very important when it comes to treating adolescents with ODD because if the family members are not active participants in the treatment process, behavioral changes are not going to last. Family therapy is held at least one time per week and focuses on issues within the family dynamic that may have been caused by the oppositional defiant behavior. Parents can learn better ways of dealing with their teen’s behavior through positive reinforcement and more effective discipline strategies. Additionally, family visitation is allowed after an adolescent or teen has been in our treatment center for at least two weeks – starting with on-campus visits and slowly progressing to overnight visits.

In addition to traditional therapy methods the ODD treatment center at The Village offers a number of experiential programs for all teens. These include:

  • Recreational therapy
  • Drama
  • Adventures program
  • Mindfulness
  • Relaxation
  • Music
  • Crafts
  • Sports

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for ODD

Once your teen has completed the our residential ODD treatment plan at The Village, the discharge plan started upon intake will be put into place. Several weeks before discharge, your adolescent’s or teen’s treatment team will make a recommendation based on the current needs of your teen. Parents will then be notified of the new doctor and treatment recommendation. Before your teen is released, their therapist will make initial contact with the new treatment provider and will set up the intake session for their next phase of treatment. Some teens will step-down into an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) depending upon how far along in the recovery process they are. Other teens may be ready to return home with referrals to traditional outpatient therapy. Whatever your continued needs, we will ensure everything is in place before you leave our care.
