How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for heroin addiction

When your adolescent or teen is addicted to heroin, you may feel at a loss for how to help them. Perhaps you’ve tried and your teen relapsed – know that relapses are common and not a sign that treatment and rehab are hopeless. Your emotions are likely all over the place – anger, fear, guilt, shame, and sorrow – which is perfectly normal. You may not know how to broach the subject of heroin abuse rehab, or if you should even bother trying to help. Here are some tips for helping your adolescent or teen start treatment for their heroin addiction:

Understand addiction: Addiction is a disease, not a choice, and what your adolescent or teen is fighting is an enormous battle. Learn as much as you can about addiction and heroin abuse rehab so that you can fully understand what your adolescent or teen is going through. Attend a N.A. (or A.A, if you can’t find a close N.A. meeting in your area) so that you are able to best understand what living as an addict is like.

Support yourself: If you pour all of your energy into your teen and their heroin addiction, you’re not able to fully care for yourself. You need support. Find a local therapist who specializes in heroin abuse rehab to help you sort through your emotions and learn the best ways to help your teen. Find local resources to obtain the support from people who have gone through similar struggles.

Guide your teen: Ultimatums may not only push your teen farther from you but cause them to be even more resistant to heroin addiction treatment. Make an appointment with a residential treatment center that provides heroin abuse rehab and see what the campus looks like. Ask the staff what your teen can expect when they are in their care. Arrange a tour with your teen.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for heroin addiction at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

Heroin addiction has negative consequences. Heroin is incredibly addictive – about a fourth of people who try heroin become dependent upon it. You may notice that your heroin addiction has taken priority over your school and personal life. Physical health may suffer, but you’re so consumed with getting more heroin that you don’t stop to consider the damage it’s doing to you. Life doesn’t have to be an endless cycle of scheming, using, and recovering from heroin. You can get clean and learn to be happy while sober.

Our residential treatment center for heroin addiction rehab, located in Knoxville, is one of the most ideal ways for an adolescent or teen to successfully beat their addiction. While inpatient treatment can be great, a residential treatment rehab center allows you a far longer time to focus on what really matters – your sobriety. You’ll be able to escape the triggers for your heroin abuse and spend time in a serene, secluded setting, away from the troubles and cares in your life so that you can focus upon your recovery and learn to lead a sober, productive, and happy life.

Our Philosophy

Village Behavioral Health philosophy and treatment benefits

Village Behavioral Health, a heroin addiction treatment center in Knoxville, is a residential treatment center that only treats chemically dependent and mentally ill teens ages 13 through 17. We offer a serene, secluded environment for our teens to begin their recovery in our monitored, supervised, and intensive therapeutic program. Our heroin addiction rehab for chemically-dependent teens is structured around the empirically-proven, scientifically-vetted 12-step approach to sobriety. Adolescents or teens struggling with sobriety will be slowly introduced into a relapse prevention program as we guide them to gain control over their heroin abuse and addiction.

Types of Treatment

Types of heroin addiction treatment offered at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

When you come to our heroin abuse rehab center, you’ll first undergo a series of evaluations that will allow us to work with you and your family to create a plan of care based upon your personal needs. Our medical exam will determine if heroin has caused any lasting physical problems and the types of substances in your body. The psychiatric evaluations will allow us to gain full understanding of your heroin addiction as well as the presence of any co-occurring mental health disorders. We’ll take the results of these evaluations and work with you and your family to put together a plan of care for your stay with us. At The Village, a heroin addiction rehab center, rather than a behavioral reward system, we use a phase system that focuses on treatment instead of behaviors. Each phase focuses on particular challenges, goals, and objectives that have been identified in your treatment plan for heroin abuse rehab.

Medication may be used at the beginning of your stay at our rehab center to reduce any unpleasant symptoms so that you’re best able to focus on your recovery. Some adolescents or teens find that they’re able to reduce, or even eliminate, their medications as they develop more adaptive coping mechanisms. Others may find they’ll need long-term medication management for treatment of co-occurring disorders. Medication usage will be overseen by our heroin abuse rehab center’s psychologist and nurse practitioner.

Individual therapy is provided once per week, more if you feel it necessary, to help you unearth the reason that you turned to heroin, and your emotions around your heroin addiction. We’ll use a variety of therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which will allow us to help you learn to see the ways in which your thoughts controlled behaviors that lead to a negative impact on your life. We’ll help you to change your thoughts and behaviors to achieve lasting changes in your life.

Group therapy is a very important part of our daily routine. You’ll begin and end the day with group in your cabin, making goals for each day, and you’ll attend a variety of groups throughout the day. Groups are a wonderful tool for healing as they allow you to feel like part of a community—something bigger than yourself. Group topics may include learning types of distorted thinking, how to change your thoughts, the importance of taking responsibility for your behaviors, and relapse prevention. You’ll also attend A.A. or N.A. meetings as The Village, located in Knoxville, uses the 12-step model for recovery.

Family therapy is necessary for full healing from heroin addiction, as heroin abuse affects each and every member of the family. We’ll meet with your family at least once per week and educate you and your family about the symptoms of heroin abuse, ways to identify substance abuse behaviors, events and emotional states that may cause a relapse, and ways to build a solid foundation for continued recovery and sobriety in your heroin addiction rehab. We’ll also refer your loved ones to available community resources, such as Nar-Anon to allow for their continued recovery.

As we focus upon treating the whole person, our heroin abuse rehab center in Knoxville offers a variety of experiential methods alongside traditional therapeutic approaches. Our 65 acre, secluded, tree-lined campus allows us to offer types of experiential methods not seen in other facilities. Our experiential programs include:

  • A.A., Emotions Anonymous, and N.A. meetings on-site
  • Crafts
  • Music
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Sports
  • Ropes course
  • Adventure programs
  • Recreation therapy
  • Water therapy

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for heroin addiction

At The Village, a heroin addiction rehab center in Knoxville,  we begin planning for your continued care during your rehab process. Your therapist at our heroin abuse rehab center will work with you and your loved ones to identify options for your adolescent or teen. A couple of weeks before discharge, your treatment team will make a recommendation for continuing care needs, and we will set up an intake session to discuss next steps in your care. You may opt to slowly integrate into your community and step down into a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which will allow you to focus on your recovery during the day and spend the evenings at home. Some teens make enough progress in our program to discharge home with referrals to traditional outpatient therapy. Whatever your needs, Village Behavioral Health in Knoxville will be there to help.

An Ideal Place to Heal

With a serene environment, individualized treatment plans, engaging activities, and top-of-the-line education for each adolescent, Village Behavioral Health sets itself apart as a treatment center that makes positive change in each child’s life.
