How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for anxiety

If your loved one is coping with an anxiety disorder, you may feel it’s time for them to seek treatment at an anxiety treatment center and get their anxiety symptoms under control. You may feel powerless to help your loved one as they struggle to complete normal activities of life. You may feel afraid for your teen’s well-being, as you struggle with your own feelings of guilt, frustration, and sadness. You may not know how to approach the topic of a residential anxiety treatment center, but know that something must be done. Here are some tips for helping your loved one into admitting themselves into a treatment center:

Educate yourself: Many people are unaware of the different ways anxiety presents in adolescents or teens. Learn about teenage anxiety, the symptoms your teen is experiencing, and ways you can gently guide them into going to an anxiety treatment center. Learning more about anxiety disorders can help you advocate for your loved one, as well.

Practice Self-Care: It can be really hard to watch your loved one struggle with anxiety disorders. You probably feel a blend of emotions at the same time and may be trying to cope with your own stress and fears. Practice self-care – find a local therapist to talk to and work through your feelings. See if your local hospital offers a support group for loved ones of teens with anxiety disorders. Do one nice thing for yourself every day.

Talk it Out: When you talk to your adolescent or teen about seeking residential care for anxiety disorders at a treatment center, be persistent but gentle. Adolescents or teens may not want to talk about their feelings with you, so be prepared to engage in a number of shorter conversations. Assure your teen that you will be there for them through the whole process.

Types of Treatment

Types of anxiety treatment offered at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN

When you come to The Village, an anxiety treatment center in Knoxville, you’ll undergo a number of assessments and evaluations so that our multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals can best help guide your treatment. Medical examinations will allow us to unearth any medical conditions that may be contributing to your anxiety and determine if you’ve been self-medicating with drugs or alcohol. The psychological evaluation will let us determine the type of anxiety disorder you have and determine if you have any other mental health disorders. We’ll take the results of your evaluations and work with you and your family to create an individualized treatment plan for your stay with us.

Medication may be used at the beginning of your treatment to get your anxiety disorder symptoms under control. When you learn more adaptive coping skills, our medical professionals at our anxiety treatment center may slowly taper you off your medication. Other people may need long-term medication management to help treat any co-occurring disorders.

Individual therapy is a type of verbal therapy that has been scientifically proven to be effective in treating anxiety disorders in adolescents or teens. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) teaches adolescents or teens skills and techniques that can be used to reduce anxiety. You’ll learn to identify and replace negative thought patterns and behaviors with more positive, adaptive ones.

Group therapy is a very important component to our anxiety treatment center’s therapeutic approach as you’ll have the opportunity to work with other adolescents or teens struggling with similar disorders so that you can all grow, learn, and heal. We hold groups many times a day and topics may include education about medication management, understanding distorted thinking, and working to change one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Family therapy is considered vital for our therapeutic process. Family sessions will focus upon addressing and resolving issues in the family dynamic. We try to hold family sessions at least once a week – on the phone if your family is out of town. Our family sessions will include education about anxiety disorders, their treatment, and ways your loved ones can help you in your recovery.

As our anxiety treatment center is focused upon treating the whole teen – mind, body, and spirit, The Village, located in Knoxville, is proud to offer a number of experiential treatment methods. These may include:

  • Crafts
  • Music therapy
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Sports
  • Adventure programs, such as our ropes course
  • Mindfulness
  • Relaxation

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for anxiety

Your anxiety treatment team will work with you and your family to determine step-down options in your community. Several weeks before you’re discharged, your anxiety treatment team will make a recommendation that will work best for your continued recovery. When all parties have decided on the most appropriate option, our discharge staff will work with other facilities that offer Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). These programs allow you to work on your recovery in a safe, supportive environment during the day and slowly reintegrate back into your community. Other teens may have made enough progress with us to continue their recovery with referrals to traditional outpatient treatment and available community resources.

An Ideal Place to Heal

With a serene environment, individualized treatment plans, engaging activities, and top-of-the-line education for each adolescent, Village Behavioral Health sets itself apart as a treatment center that makes positive change in each child’s life.
